The Sacrifice of Isaac

One of my favorite passages in the bible as it foreshadows the sacrifice of Jesus, this story has been a common subject in Christian art. The paintings done by various artists have all the elements of the story in it: the Angel of the Lord; the ram; and Isaac and Abraham. Although rightfully considered great works of art, the presentation of these elements are often not scripturally correct. This study is not a lesson in art history. It is not an evaluation or critique of the paintings but rather a look at them from a biblical perspective. Here is part of the biblical account of the sacrifice of Isaac. Gen 22:6   And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. Gen 22:7   And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
